Dr. John Bergman became a chiropractor after an auto accident left him severely injured, but thanks to the therapies of alternative health, he made a full recovery. Inspired by the power he saw in the body, he now passionately advocates for alternative health practices.
Episode
When John Bergman got into a serious car wreck, he got the feeling that the medicine he was being prescribed may have been making him worse instead of better. He decided to research further and go to chiropractic school and has become a champion of alternative medicine. He wants people to truly start thinking about what modern medicine is doing to their bodies, and why their bodies are failing them. The answer, he believes, is that we might be misdiagnosing simple adaptive responses that our body is having to other problems-simple problems like stress, little exercise, too much time sitting, or taking in too many toxins from medications and processed foods. Traditional medicine might be overcomplicating things and overlooking our simple need to get our immune system in order. We discuss:
- The dark side of vaccinations
- How stress might be causing you heart problems, reproductive problems, and more
- Why you should assume your blood is too acidic
- The danger that lurks in processed, homogenized milk
Here’s what I learned:
Adaptive Physiology
- Many of the things that we think are serious issues are simply adaptive responses to what’s happening in our body.
- Stress puts you in a fight or flight state, and your body reacts to that.
- Your heart rate will elevate
- Your liver starts to break down more glycogen and glucose
- Your energy level goes up
- The blood supply to the gut shuts down
- Reproductive organs are altered
- This list are all natural adaptive physiologies to stress
- Many people are misdiagnosed with serious health problems such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
Parasympathetic and Sympathetic Systems
- Parasympathetic-the rest digestion repair mode.
- Activated at night
- Governs the immune system
- Rests in the sacrum-near the butt area
- This area can be impinged by misaligned bones by sitting at a computer all day
- This limits how your body digests
- Sympathetic-the fight or flight
- Generally activated during the day
- Located in the middle of the ribcage
- Any trauma to that area damages the nerve supply to the heart
- Can cause cardiac arrhythmias, chest pain, even heart attacks
John’s Journey to Chiropractic Medicine
- John got hit by a car, and bruised a bunch of organs.
- He had several operations on his knees, each one felt worse and worse.
- Started seeing a chiropractor that said “our body is designed for health, health is your natural state.”
- The doctor started giving him anti-inflammatories, but that destroys his body’s ability to heal.
- Decided to go back to chiropractic school.
- Everything changed at human dissection class–was eye opening.
- He realized we could regenerate joins and reverse arthritis.
Healthy inflammation versus unhealthy inflammation
- Systemic inflammatory is like “death by 1000 cuts”-inflammatory response you’re experiencing from the tissue damaged has exceeded your body’s ability to repair itself.
- Anti-inflammatories (Aleve, Advil) stop the body’s ability to repair.
- Steroids weaken the body’s ability to regenerate tissues.
- You can’t treat symptoms, you need to get to the source.
- Even fevers can have important roles in healing the body.
- There’s even a treatment for leukemia being tested that warms the patient’s blood to 107 degrees, then transfers back into the body.
Acidic blood
- The body has to live off of a very narrow pH-need to maintain the base nature of the blood.
- High acidity could be from a lack of water
- It could also be from a diet high in processed food and fast food
- Or, someone who takes tons of medications
- The way to treat osteoporosis is to treat acidic blood
- Calcium will alkalinize the blood
- Don’t prescribe medications that increase chance of fractures to patients with thin bones
The Problem with Processed Milk
- Homogenizing the milk breaks up the fat globules and makes it tough on your arteries.
- Pasteurization kills healthy enzymes.
- Cows are being pumped with hormones so they can constantly produce milk.
- If you drink milk, make sure it’s organic, non-homogenized, no hormones added.
- Raw cheeses are ok.
Protein Powders
- When using protein powders, plant protein will be more easily absorbed.
- You only need 5-7% of your diet to be protein.
- Cauliflower has 30% protein.
- If you are consuming animal-based protein, try gelatin
- It is already broken down, so it doesn’t require a lot of stomach acid
- We have to break down whatever we are eating to absorb the nutrients
- People on the Atkins diet have very taxed kidneys because of how hard it is to break down the meat
How to Alkalize
- Go on a plant-based diet.
- Eat nothing but organic food.
- Take in 50% of your body weight in water every day.
- Drink alkaline water.
Coconut oil
- The fatty acids in coconut oil are helpful in brain damage and fungal infections
- John recommends 10 to 15 tablespoons of coconut oil for fungal infections
- You can even give kids a pint of coconut-based ice cream to help heal their brain.
Live Blood Analysis
- It can be very hard to find a doctor that does these.
- The doctor will look at a drop of your blood under a microscope and blast it up on a screen.
- You can see the molecules moving, white blood cells, and if you have nutrient deficiencies.
- Stephan noticed a difference in his live blood analysis after cutting out sugar.
Sugar intake
- People who eat a lot of sugar are typically craving more energy.
- A diet full of healthy fats can satisfy a lot of those cravings.
- Healthy sugars do exist
- organic coffee plus a simple carbohydrate can be great for adrenal function
Cranial sacral therapy
- Affects the nervous system, so it is going to affect the body long-term.
- Great if the person sits a lot, also helpful for ADD, ADHD, endometriosis, difficult menstrual cycles.
- Standing desks also help with these sorts of problems.
Adrenal Stress
- The adrenals are the pharmacy of the body
- The adrenals produce glucocorticoid steroid, and every sex hormone, as well as cortisol
- Adrenals produce every hormone out of cholesterol.
- People who have high cholesterol have adrenal stress.
- To solve adrenal stress:
- Check the parasympathetic
- Check the cranial sacral area
- Check the gut for healthy nutrients
Iodine
- Great for thyroid health.
- People used to use land-based salts and their thyroid would swell up, because of the lack of Iodine
- Polyunsaturated fats depress the thyroid.
- Ask a doctor why your body stopped functioning the way it should.
- Get educated before starting a new drug.
- Cholesterol lowering drugs increases your risk of diabetes by 30%, Alzheimer’s by 40%.
Diabetes
- 95% of diabetes is Type 2.
- This type of diabetes is 100% curable.
- One of the main causes is toxic food and medications.
- Cholesterol and blood pressure drugs will increase type 2 diabetes.
Cancer
- Breast cancer and prostate cancer.
- Both were renamed “not cancer”.
- Cancer is a temporary state of the body.
- There are thousands of treatments effective in treating cancer that are not as harmful as chemo.
- Cancer is from having a toxic, deficient lifestyle.
- Flu shots are from neoplastic cell growth, so they are injecting you with cancer cells.
- Cancer is a normal occurrence in the body and never becomes a problem with a healthy immune system.
- Allow your immune system to function correctly and the cancer goes away.
Alzheimer’s
- The cause of Alzheimer’s is unhealthy nutrients
- From unhealthy eating, from drugs and medications, toxic components
- Blood pressure and cholesterol drugs are leading to Alzheimer’s
- Aluminum, which is in every major vaccine, is bad for your brain
Autism
- Another plague in modern society.
- We have until 2025 until 1 in 2 children are autistic.
- Current estimates are 1 in 28.
- Kids today are given around 70 vaccines.
- Their parents had 4 or 5 vaccines
- Parents with a weakened immune system, they give birth to a child with massive neurotoxins.
- We need to stop putting neurotoxins in the body.
- Let kids get chicken pox and measles.
- You cannot sue a vaccine company for the damage that vaccines do.
- People are named anti-vaxxer, but there are thousands of doctors, scientists and chiropractors that are educated in this and are against vaccines
- You should be exposed to viruses through the nose and mouth
- The vaccines trigger an inflammatory response
- training the immune system to respond with inflammation
- this is why we’re seeing a massive rise in inflammatory disease
Heart Disease
- Only 20% of people who have heart attacks are due to blocked arteries.
- • But the infrastructure of hospitals is all based on stents, arterial grams, bypass surgeries
- Heart disease is reversible.
- People don’ t realize that if you have heart damage, you need a higher blood pressure to keep oxygen flowing to that heart muscle
Obamacare
- The system is broken, so they’re trying to find people to join the medical system that aren’t going to utilize it.
- We need to move away from the fee for service medical system.
Probiotics
- Probiotics are great, but if your diet is plant based and organic and raw, you’re not going to require them.
- As we get older, we may require digestive enzymes, and probiotics are great source for this.

Get optimized!
- Ditch the homogenized, pasteurized milk. Instead, go for raw milk, or if you can’t find raw, at least an organic, un-homogenized option. This will have far healthier fats, and be better for the nervous system.
- Trying to bulk up with some protein? Plant-based options will be a lot easier for your body to absorb. Or if you want to do animal-based, gelatin comes pre-processed, so less work for your digestive tract.
- The plant-based diet is the healthiest diet in the world-it’s been proven. If you like meat, tone it down to at least only a few times a month.
